The Navy House
With significant historic and architectural characteristics, this project sought to reimagine the spatial opportunities of the home while retaining, enhancing and celebrating its Federation Arts and Crafts features.
Within the home, its original details have been preserved and reinterpreted in a playful colour palette with contemporary finishes. To the rear, a lofted modern extension has been delicately designed with steel-framed doors to delineate the old and the new spaces of the home. Coupled with a contemporary kitchen of natural materials and soft curves, the energy of the home has been encouraged to flow effortlessly throughout the historic and the modern spaces without interruption.
This project artfully displays how our heritage places can be respectfully and creatively reimagined and how historic and the contemporary spaces can be stylishly integrated. With careful design and consideration of its historic contribution, this handsome home continues to be a valuable asset to Mosman’s built environment.
Sustainability
Retaining and enhancing the historic fabric of the home reduced resource and material consumption during construction and embraced the embodied energy within the building. The awnings and verandah of the home allow passive solar shading and the enlarged door and window openings and soaring ceilings encourage natural cross ventilation.
