Hunter Bay House
Nestled above the Bennett Beachside rockpools, this project sought to reimagine this long-held family home.
Embracing the natural topography of the landscape, the home has a subtle presentation to the built environment but glimpses of its internal courtyards, set beyond its front rooms, provide an insight into the gardens within.
Removing part of the bulk of the original building, and introducing two open-air courtyards, floods the home with natural light. Crossing the bridge, through the canopied courtyards, the home opens to the water views that expand across the rear elevation. Paired with a soaring pitched ceiling, the living spaces are bathed in the sunlight and fresh air of the Balmoral slopes.
Inspired by the local rockpools that hold such value to the residents, a neutral colour palette, complemented by marine hues and natural timber, instils a soft calm quality to the home that perfectly suits its position in the landscape.
Sustainability
Introducing open-air courtyards reduced the bulk of the building, allowing for solar access and ventilation into the home’s centre. The courtyards provide an aesthetic outlook for lower-level bedrooms and a canopy-like experience crossing the bridge above. Skylights across the upper level and staircase provide further solar access throughout the home.
