Hearth in the Well
Hearth in the Well exemplifies a judicious integration of contemporary architectural design with an existing Federation-era residence, illustrating how significant architectural heritage can be adapted and enhanced without subjugation. It enriches the Mosman built environment by demonstrating respectful architectural stratification and cohesive, functional design, augmenting a family living space while preserving the building’s historical integrity. Additionally, the strategic relocation of the garage and the comprehensive redesign of the garden improve the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the outdoor spaces, consequently contributing to the area’s overall livability.
“The positive outcome of this project is that we have been able to work with the existing building, (and) an existing valuable architecture, without ruining (it), without overpowering (it) and very subtly work(ing) with it. And on a (more) smaller scale, it is a beautifully crafted object and place to live for a family.” – Luigi Rosselli
Sustainability
Adaptive reuse guided the home’s sustainable design. Key spaces were reworked, retaining the existing footprint, improving functionality without extensive demolition. The garage was relocated, creating a sunken lounge integrating with outdoor areas. Sustainable choices include low-e glazing, adjustable shutters, retractable awnings, and solar panels and pool heating for enhanced energy efficiency.
