75 Shadforth Street – Mosman Design Awards

Mosman Preparatory School – 75 Shadforth Street

This community based project galvanised the children at the Mosman Preparatory school to work together to create their own version of a green wall. The children collected bottles and materials from home and worked together with teachers and parents to create and build the wall. Plants were bought from the children’s gardens and inserted into the wall as a memorable element for each child.

The judges were impressed with the philosophy behind this project. The children have learned the power of team work as well as creativity in the planting they have put into the wall. The references to home and contribution of the parents and teachers with the kids has strengthened the community bonds and bought the participants closer. The children who participated are still proud of the wall and the school watches the wall as it grows and develops.

From a sustainability viewpoint it is also very successful in the recycling of elements and materials from our daily life.

Sustainability

The PET Bottle greenwall project represents sustainability in design and construction through the high use of recycled materials including PET bottles and the use of inorganic material that has been made of 94% of recycled materials.

Innovative sustainable design elements:

A reticulation system is installed on the wall to water the plants. The greenwall is irrigated from the top of the wall, making these greenwalls low maintenance. In addition, the amount of water required to water the wall is equivalent to 10 showers of recycled water over a one-year period.

Environmental footprint of the building is minimised by:

This greenwall is built from recycled PET bottles, which can help reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and reduces heat distribution of direct light onto the building. The greenwall also utilise inorganic materials, which are made from 94% of recyclable materials that would otherwise be destined for Australian landfill.
