The original home was an unattractive and outdated Spanish mission inspired two storey dwelling, surrounded by high quality homes in one of Mosman’s best streets. The front of the site was well positioned with a northern orientation and potential for views towards Balmoral Beach, but neither were optimised by the existing home. The front formal rooms were retained and preserved, and an open gabled roof added to provide a sunny covered outdoor area to take in the Balmoral water views. The remainder of the ground and first floor was significantly reconfigured to provide more functional spaces with bespoke interior and exterior elements throughout. The owner’s personal taste heavily influenced the resulting design, who requested an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary elements, rather than opting for any set design aesthetic.
The home features high quality, durable materials with double glazing, optimal insulation and in-slab heating for thermal comfort. An abundance of natural light and cross ventilation also ensures the home is not reliant on artificial lighting, heating and cooling to achieve a high level of amenity for the home’s occupants.
