This project involved extensive alterations and additions to the “Greenkeepers Cottage”, a semi detached cottage, which is one of a group of four heritage listed cottages in Gouldsbury Street.

Sustainability

The alterations and additions to the existing heritage listed cottage were carefully designed to maximise the use of sustainable environmentally friendly materials and minimise construction waste, energy consumption and long term CO2 emissions, whilst providing a comfortable contemporary living environment.

Innovative sustainable design elements:

Extensive multi layer wall and ceiling insulation in new upper storey additions.
Sustainable framing timber throughout.
Recycled flooring timbers.
Recycled dry press common brickwork.
Energy efficient gas instantaneous HWS.
Low energy LED lighting.

Environmental footprint of the building is minimised by:

Additional floor area is contained solely in an upper storey addition to the existing semi.

This minimised the ratio of external wall surface area to total floor area, reducing heat loss to and heat gain from the external environment, which together with extensive insulation used reduces CO2 emissions significantly.
