The client wanted a contemporary design with a human touch for a feeling of homeliness, which also met the objectives of the local character.
The curved roof form with the lower skillion is a form that one can relate with. The glazed vertical face allows natural light to stream into the top level and down the open stair well. The large eave helps with sun control and the articulation, with recesses and short wall lengths, creates human scale.
The design exploits the steep site using level changes that lead from the entry, down to an open plan living area and kitchen. This opens out to an outdoor deck area, and then the pool and garden, which creates a microclimate. The northern orientation ensures the space is bathed in natural light.
The arrangement of the public and private spaces is to the front and rear which minimises the need for large windows along the sides.
